So, who managed to snag one of the first (and only) run of GXi Raws? I'm curious to hear how they sound. In my opinion, the Raw could be the ultimate incarnation of the GXi. I was really hoping these new Raw models would be "it" for CA and give them the money they needed to pioneer my "Traditional Series" line of guitars.
:)
No wonder they didn't seize upon all my weird ideas. They I would have been the one putting them out of business. :(
(Or maybe I would have saved them? hmm)
Well, the tobakky will make people jealous, too, trust me. :) I swear the tobacco burst makes it sound even better. One of the most frighteningly cool looking guitars ever.

Jesse, I didn't know, when I grabbed that GXi RAW from MacNichol a couple of weeks ago that it was destined/doomed to be a "special model" one of a kind run from CA. Unfortunately, I won't be able to even see it until July. I had Michael set it up for my playing style and ship it to a friend in Maine. It is destined to be my "Maine Axe" (as opposed to my "Main Axe" - see below..). I have officially stopped playing the airline roulette. (which overheads will my guitar fit in and will they even let me carry it on or gate check it). I usually spend six to 8 weeks in Maine every summer.
I grabbed it (the GXi RAW) because the price was right - as well as my experience with the GXi model. I bought the
red "NAMM demo" GXi HG from MacNichol a couple of years ago and that has become my "Main Axe". Love it! Beautiful tone and fairly easy to play.

Update: July is getting closer! I have my ticket and will be in Maine on the 12th. I have been busy with Michael over the last few weeks. I sent him my Tobacco Burst for evaluation and set-up and that guitar is now back in Maine waiting for my arrival.. I will have to decide which one to keep.. It may be a hard choice as I love that sunburst finish... He and Justin recommended bell brass pins so I went along with that - looks a little goofy but they recommended them for only the wound strings..
here are a couple of pics... The Raw pic is a grab from an internet advertisement
OK you got both which one sounds the best or if you had to choose just one which would it be.
Steve
I will answer that question in about 4 weeks...
The look of your black slim triangle pickguard is really unique. Gives the guitar a little bit of a vintage electric look? Works on the GX cutaway. I have no artisic sense and went for the clear ones.
Steve
Yeah... It was patterned after the pick-guard on my old 57 Les Paul..
I cut it out of that static stick rubbery plastic stuff that was mentioned on this forum a couple of years ago.
I guess I should add that guitar to my profile?

I have a GX gloss to go along with my GXi Tobacco Burst. Between those two, which sounds better? I can't say. To me, they both sound great, and are distinctly different from each other.
I do not have "both" anymore... I jammed with a friend for an evening and I (we) made up my (our) minds that the tobacco burst sounded not better but more mellow.
The GXi Raw was definitely louder and brighter.. But - the Tobacco Burst (especially after Michael and Justin did their magic on it was more pleasing to my ear than the Raw. Justin installed bell brass bridge pins in the tobacco Burst which opened up the sound on the wound strings "just enough'. Previously - it had a little too much bass muddiness.. The brass pins made it sound more like a guitar than it did before... (only way I can think of to describe it). Definitely brighter but not as bright as the GXi Raw.
A friend in Delaware was anxiously waiting for my decision and told me to send my reject to him as he was suffering from "CA Gas" in the worst way...
Anyway, I UPS'd it to him last week - He used it on a gig last weekend and here is his comments:
"I like it a lot. I used it at a gig last night; it sounded great; very responsive. I talked a bit about it and several people came up wanting info on where they could get one. I think CA went under prematurely; too bad."
Carl Butler (not of C&W fame)
I turned the raw down for the tobakky bust. Almost wish I went the raw route now if for no other reason than to make everybody jealous. :o
