As most of you know, I am by habit and inclination a nylon string guitar advocate. I've played several carbon fiber steel string guitars, but want a nylon string carbon fiber guitar. Rainsong discontinued their nylon string guitar and they are rare and expensive. Emerald is working on a nylon string guitar and I am in for one. Blackbird makes a successful nylon string guitar, according to Ryan and a number of other sources, but it is not my nylon string guitar. On the other hand, I was taking a closer look at the Blackbird Super OM and, by golly, I could see it as a nylon string guitar. Humm?
ryan... does your girlfriend work for blackbird or something? just kiddin'
really you should get and endorsement from them. you are firing up the interest in this forum for this company! i kinda' feel jealous you found your guitar (or brand)! i'm so happy for you
i'm really interested on your thoughts regarding the differences about the OM and the rider, specially regarding sounding. please!
about the OM nylon... i suppose the bracing it has is not the best for nylon to sound properly. it is not just only changing the strings. anyway, you don't know till you try! i have never seen this changes to work properly. maybe it's the first time.
i also look forward for blackbird to create a new larger (and maybe a little more traditional) nylon guitar. future is promising indeed!
Ryan;
You are right, I need to try a nylon rider. My first response to the Cargo was that I would not like it, and I cam to think of it as one of the neatest guitars I've ever played. My problem now is that my summer schedule is a mess and I'm not sure when I could committ to the road trip. Hopefully I'll get up to Salt Lake and try one out.
I appreciate your advice.
Evan
We are working on a one-off of a Super OM with Nylon strings for a good friend. The bracing is light and it'll be more of a flamenco style guitar. We are going to widen the neck a bit as well of course. That same friend gave us a Rainsong Nylon string which is not suitable as an acoustic to my ears(good plugged in). Our much smaller Rider Nylon is noticeably louder and basser. The Super OM Nylon will hopefully be a great acoustic nylon. If it goes well, maybe we can make a mold and go for it. I should note, that in our experience nylon string guitars take a great deal more work to assemble and set up well. We make a custom nut, and getting the action just so is more of a challenge. I'll definitely upload some pics when its done (2-6 months) Anyway, let me know your thoughts in the meantime.
there you have it folks... name your guitar and it shall be done.
your decisions just got harder Evan....
how cool is that?????? looks like a super om nylon is in my not to distant future as well!!!!
THANKS JOE!!!
future is really nice! evan, now you have two options! what you'll do? i'm absolutely sure the nylon OM will be amazing! (GAS coming!)
joe, after the amazing work and discoverments you did with the nylon rider, i'm sure you'll do an amazing guitar. i'm convinced you should consider this a new product in your line up. and... to what extent you accept custom orders?
I don't see any problem with having options--I'll just have to buy them all. I am first in line for the Emerald nylon string, and I'll be in line for an OM nylon. I just sold two more wooden guitars and my carbon trust fund is doing well. I've always felt that the biggest challenge for carbon fiber guitar makers was the nylon string guitar. Hundreds of years of tradition and development makes for stiff competition. I count myself as fortunate to be in a time and place where I can contribute. This forum's thread on nylon string guitars was fascinating, and it illustrates the wide range of options and considerations that must go into any new development. Neat.
interesting!!! so you'll be recording the first comparison video of all the nylon CF guitars at once! i'm looking forward it
Maybe. I have yet to focus on what it takes to do an audio/visual presentation. I might do just an audio and you'd just have to imagine how good looking I am, and so forth. But rest assured that you will get the print version of my experience with carbon fiber nylon string guitars.

...and playing them all at once. This will be just like those spinning plate performances on the old Ed Sullivan show.

Well, we have had this conversation before.. but there is just no way for you to know that the nylon rider is not for you without having played it. You have to get in on the road trip.
At the very least you will get an idea of what their fit/finish and hollow neck building style does for a nylon guitar.
Believe me.. I was asking myself the same questions... thinking I would rather have a super om nylon or whatever... but the nylon rider is perfect in its own right.. bigger is not necessarily better.
For example, I now lust for a steel string rider because having a super om has made me realize that the level of comfort you get with a smaller bodied guitar is extremely valuable (even though the super om is vastly more comfortable than a dreadnought.. etc).... and with the hollow neck and offset sound hole you still get a very big and full sound.
All that being said... if blackbird make a "super nylon" I would have to get it as well. Im totally into their style. Im going to get the uke as well. Probably any stringed instrument they make I would get. I just dig the shape, the hollow neck and head, the fretboard, the sound you get from that kevlar lining... the whole deal...
Every time I pick up my nylon rider I am amazed.
