McPherson Experience

WOW!!!!!!!!!

Yesterday I had the opportunity to test drive a McPherson guitar while in in Fredericksburg, VA.  This particular one had beeswing mahogany back/sides and a spruce top (forget which species).  It was, without doubt, the most beautiful sounding guitar I have ever heard!  And, it played very well.  The sustain on this instrument was "piano-like" and the balance was incredible.

If the cost wasn't so prohibitive (almost as much as the lawyer's fees for getting a divorce -- which surely would have happened had I bought it!) I would proudly brought it back to Michigan.

If you get an opprtunity to try one, take it ... or if you have an unlimited supply of $$$, buy one.  Absolutely marvelous.

Just wanted to share the experience,

Ray

Re: McPherson Experience

Ray,

I have not played a McPherson, . . . . but have at least seen some in person at a store in Highland Park, IL.    They were blocked off with signs stating that you should ask permission of the store to touch.  Since I was not seriously shopping, I limited my handling to carbon fiber guitars, and a few Martins.

The McPhersons are not all decked out with abalone and such, . . . but they can come with woods that have all the spectacular grains and colors that make wood appealing.   Yes, they are quite expensive!!

While I have not personally played a McPherson, . . . the McPherson website usually provides a good number of song excerpts where pros are playing McPherson's, and . . . . listening through some good headphones plugged into my PC, . . . the sound is pretty impressive.

NOTE:  that if I recall correctly, . . . digging through the specs on the McPherson website discloses that the McPherson neck is reinforced with "CARBON FIBER".

Re: McPherson Experience

Jim,

You're right about the carbon fiber truss rod.  It's not adjustable ... "they" say the relief never changes ... that the neck is forever stable.  Adjustments are made via 3 different saddles which are matched to the nut.

The neck does not touch the soundboard top:  It is cantilevered above the top ... a design feature which apparently gives it great sustain.

According to the AGF forum, there are other guitars with a lower price point which sound equally as good.  BUT, I've never seen/heard/played one.

All that said, I'm considereing a CF purchase ... when I play the one that fits my fancy!

Re: McPherson Experience

I tried a MacPherson guitar owned by a friend and was not crazy about it - scared of the 4k price tag in part. It sounded great; but then so do Martin/Taylor/Breelove/etc. I was not convinced that the extra sound hole in the top bout near the ear made any diff. Ditto the fingerboard floating over the top. More than gimmicks? Maybe, maybe not.
