I made a goal for myself last year... play actual gigs. I'm doing that. Now my goal is to be able to sing two or three of my own songs during next summer's gigs. To that end, here are the words to my first attempt. I'm thinking of a lonely DADGAD celtic-like fingerpicked melody to go with it. What do you think?
Falling Up (by buzzardwhiskey)
… intro …
We came down off a two lane
Away from the sparse pale lights
Trading the drone of the road
For sage scented desert night
And far out into nowhere
Slow and alone in the world
Ghosts in a wide dark valley
We crept as the sky unfurled
… interlude …
Dirt road on Table Mesa
We stopped and shut off the bike
Summer night came rushing in
So close it was lover-like
The stars shone bright and whispered
As we lay on the still warm sand
Of a secret brotherhood
The lost consciousness of man
… interlude …
The world’s weight turned to nothing
And our bodies floated free
As dark earth gave up her hold
We rose toward the sparkling sea
Then Kim began to giggle
You know I began to cry
Born of the same loosened heart
Sensing the soft bye and bye
… intro …
Thanks! As soon as I've worked out a melody, I'll record something. Actually, I'm working on a bridge. :)
BW:
I don't know if this applies to you, but I've found that once I've got the lyrics and music down, that's the point where the song is generally its best--fresh, vital, meaningful. I look forward to hearing the song.
My song is beginning to take shape and I'll be performing it soon.
It's a slow blues. I've added the chords, but I haven't bothered putting them over their respective sung-syllables (it's an 8-bar blues so it's pretty self explanatory).

I'm not sure what to think about this song. I think the way you play and sing this song will determine how it's understood. You're sailing deep waters here.

I haven't had a rudder of my own since I ran aground about 25 years ago. If I'm in deep water, it's just the drift. :)
Meanwhile, Buzzard is back at the ranch, working out his new song. When next we hear, he will probably have some talented musicians backing his songwriting labors. Ole!
It'll be a nice week after Christmas. Slow. I'll try to write something. The third song. I promised myself that I would be able to take out three songs this summer. :)
Has anyone read Richard Bach's "Illusions"? I would love to turn the prelude story into a song.
controversial, boy oh boy
like to hear it
I am going to start writing some tunes about Kansas and the old time culture around here. Mainly kind of silly songs. Nothing quite as Libertarian.
Let us know when it is done.
Very nice! I think you have the hang of it. life is good. Now for an audio/visual from your friendly Kodak
