Walked into my local music store and there was this Rainsong on the wall used but virtually new condition. Cool, part N1 neck. Been a while since I played one. Definitely one of the best necks on a carbon. Much nicer than the thick N2, I will never forgive Steve Miller. Great sound but noticed very high action up the neck. Thought well this is why you need a N2. Tested the relief and no it was perfect. The issue was saddle height. Seemed to me not enough saddle to take it where I would want. Interesting? The whole bridge seemed thicker to me than my six string Rainsongs. Did I say I curse Steve Miller?

I agree with you about the superiority of the N1 neck. Physical issues keep me from the N2, that's why I don't own a Shorty, etc. Maybe if we keep writing about the N1 neck RS will see the light! :)

After seeing that 12 string with perfect relief, I would order a N1 without hesitation. Reality the N1 is not out there any more, cause a truss rod is thought to be necessary to market the guitar. It is one of the few misssteps, in my eyes that Rainsong has made. I kind of assume they may have needed that thickness to pull off a truss rod. I know that many love the N2 many more have convinced themselves they like it. ( I have ). But in reality you will find few modern guitars that have this thickness. Most modern guitars have a thinner Taylor like neck like the N1.

Myself, I prefer a thicker neck. Once a neck get's too thin, I find that it hurts my hand/wrist. So even if there was no truss rod, I would prefer the N2. I actually really like the neck profile and would not want anything changed on it.

That is why it is good to have choices. The neck profile on my new emerald is even a little beefier than the rainsong N2 neck profile. But, I still like it quite a lot, so no complaints!

Choices would be good but no question Rainsong is trying to phase out the N1. Its not being offered on their new 12 fret models. Probably my preference has been made more aware to me cause I have been playing so much 6 string Banjo on my Deering B6. They have a awesome thin profile all the way up the neck.

Your comment about Emeralds neck being beefier than Rainsong I just don't think is true? Gave the two necks to my wife as arbitrator and she says Rainsong is thicker.

Currently most of RainSong's standard length models are available in both N1 and N2 necks (check out their website). I was able to get my Concert Jumbo with an N1 neck no problem. The 12 strings actually come with a neck specific to them that's different from the N1 or N2. Its pretty much the same neck they've been using on their 12 strings all along. No truss rod.

Da! Thanks Greg never thought about the 12 string neck has not changed. I realize the N1 is available on the long necks guitars but you have to special order it like you did. It now is virtually extinct in guitar stores because of its lack of a trust rod. And with the popular short neck guitars you have no option.

Your comment about Eneralds neck being beefier than Rainsong I just don't think is true?

If I take my shubb capo off my emerald and try to put it on my rainsong on the same fret, I have to tighten it slightly. It's just slightly beefier than the rainsong neck.

On my Six string side of the Doubleneck just the opposite. I take my capo off the Emerald and put it on my N2 JM1000 I have to back the capo off cause it is too tight. Just played a song this morning where I played a F chord and I need to have my thumb grap the low E string. That was fine on my Emerald, on the Rainsong I was getting pain at the thumb joint from it digging in. Could Alistair have changed neck profiles for the double? How old is your Emerald? Steve

Both of my Emerald nylon strung guitars have very slim necks. My X10N is the closest I've ever come to an acoustic guitar that played like an electric--easy and fast. Of course, I am used to the classical necks which were about 2 feet thick and almost required both hands to get a good grip.

It is a brand new X7-OS Artisan. I received it about a month ago. It does have a truss rod in the neck. I really like the profile. It is very nice, but it is ever so slightly deeper than my rainsong with the N2 shorty profile.
