Breedlove’s Atlas Series contains a number of different basses, including the ABJ250/SM4, which is made with Breedlove’s jumbo body with a soft cutaway. The top is solid sitka spruce, whereas the sides/back are made out of mahogany. The combination of sitka spruce and mahogany results in a deep, mellow, sound. Additionally, it produces decent volume. One of the biggest complaints about acoustic bass guitars is that they lack the volume needed to play without an amplifier. The ABJ250/SM isn’t loud by any means, but the volume is sufficient to play unplugged with perhaps two or three other guitars/mandolins/banjos, but with more than that the bass would be overpowered.
Features include a hardshell case, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, pearl position markers, satin finish, Tusq nut and saddle, JLD bridge truss, Fishman Classic IV Pickup with bass-optimized E.Q., chrome Grover tuners, satin finish, and an abalone rosette with black border.

CA Guitars has released its much anticipated Cargo, a portable sized version of the popular GX model. The Cargo is available either with or without electronics (Fishman Acoustic Matrix VT) . The combination of carbon fiber’s durability, along with a portable size make for the ultimate travel guitar by CA Guitars. Features of the Cargo include Gotoh SG 381 tuners and a gig bag. The body style is based on CA Guitars popular GX parlor model, but with an offset soundhole (see picture below).

MacNichol Guitars has pre-ordered sixteen of these models, however, many are already sold because of the rave reviews that the guitar has already received. If you are interested in purchasing a Cargo, please contact us to place a hold on one.

Breedlove’s Passport Series includes the D20/FS, which has a full-sized neck and a 7/8 body. Although it certainly makes a great travel guitar, it’s really just a small-bodied dreadnought, that, in addition to being portable, would be great for children or small adults. The guitar has a solid sitka spruce top along with mahogany sides and back.
That this isn’t your typical travel guitar becomes obvious when you first play it. Although it certainly doesn’t have the volume of a regular-sized dreadnought, it nevertheless has great volume. Additionally, the bass comes through very clearly — warm, deep, yet without being overpowering. The mids and highs come through clearly, with a warm, wooden sound from the mahogany back and sides, and putting a slide to the D20/FS results in a clear, whining tone.
Like all dreadnoughts, the Breedlove D20/FS is versatile and will work well for most playing styles. I especially like this guitar for fingerpicking, though, as it’s somewhere in between a full-sized dreadnought and a concert body. I also liked this guitar for alternate picking, although the D20/FS does not come with a pickguard.
Features include black/white/black rosette, pearl dot position markers, black binding, chrome tuners and a gig bag.

MacNichol Guitars and Mandolins has a Breedlove bass guitar (model ABJ250/SM4) with a small blemish - a barely noticeable knick (see picture below) on the top finish that can only be seen at the right angle in the right light. Because of this small nick, this acoustic bass guitar is being sold for a significant price reduction - $630, which includes free shipping to the continental U.S. Five year manufacturer’s warranty is included; however, the blemish is not covered in the warranty.

Features include a solid sitka spruce top, hardshell case, Tusq nut and saddle, Fishman Classic IV Pickup (bass), chrome Grover tuners, satin finish, abalone rosette with black border.
When a Breedlove instrument is found to have some type of cosmetic blemish, then the builder will list it as a “second” and discount the price significantly. The cosmetic blemishes are usually either a minor knick or something to do with the finish, such as a noticeably light area within the stain.

There is nothing functionally wrong with these seconds. The bracing, JLD bridge truss, bridge, woods, neck, neck truss, fingerboard, nut, and tuning machines are all fine. If there is something functionally wrong with a guitar, Breedlove lists it as a “third”, and then saws out a part of the body and then sends the guitar to a dealer who can then show customers the Breedlove bracing and JLD bridge truss.

Formerly known as the Players Series X, CA Guitars 5S-CE displays the wonders of carbon fiber guitar technology. Most noticeably, the guitar has an amazing cutaway. In addition to the sharp cutaway that allows easy access to the upper frets, there is also a cutaway on the back of the guitar that allows your palm to fit nicely along the back of the guitar’s sound box. This is possible because of the strength of carbon fiber, which allows for a strong neck that does not require a heel block, another benefit of carbon fiber construction.

Thus, when reaching the upper frets, your hand fits perfectly into CA Guitars dual cutaway, allowing for easy access all the way up to the 20th fret. Up this high, you can achieve a piano-like “clink” tone on the treble strings, or a sound similar to that of a plucked cello on the mid and bass strings.
The 5S-CE has a thin body, but you’d never know it when playing unplugged because of the power that carbon fiber produces. Features include includes x bracing, Gotoh 381 tuners, aluminum side dots, and Fishman Acoustic Matrix VT electronics. CA Guitars model 5S-CE also comes with a well-padded gig bag that includes several pockets and three non-slip plastic footers for placing down on the ground.
