CA Guitars New Xi Guitar, Thin Body Guitar with Cut Away

September 18th, 2008 . by MacNichol

CA Guitars is excited to announce the newest addition to its line of great sounding, ultra durable, high-end carbon fiber acoustic guitars featuring Integrated Top Bracing Technology ™ (ITB™).

The new Xi guitar is a thin body cut away (formerly known as the “S” body model) featuring revolutionary technology where bracing is built into the top rather than made separately and adhesively bonded. ITB™ represents the most recent advancement in bracing technology and is a result of over 10 years of CA research and development.

The new Xi instruments have the tone and warmth common to great acoustic guitars, but have a low end response that exceeds that of most guitars in its class.

The CA team would not settle for just a big bottom end- it had to have good balance and excellent range.  Using the Acoustic Tailoring™ process, the new Xi instruments have clean mids and sparkling highs in addition to a bigger bass response.

The new Xi guitar comes standard with an active under-saddle pickup system and is available in a road tough (RT) scratch resistant finish in Red, Wine, Green, Blue and Charcoal ($1998 Retail) or in high gloss finish in Red, Blue or Carbon Burst ($2266 Retail).

Check out the entire line of great sounding, road worthy acoustic guitars made right here in the USA. From indoors to outdoors, basements to attics, wall hooks to guitar stands, super humid to bone dry, CA Guitars are ready when you are, wherever you are.

Breedlove Guitars New Stage, Studio and Solo Series

September 18th, 2008 . by MacNichol

Breedlove Guitars Announces New Stage, Studio, and Solo Series.

The all new Breedlove Atlas Series comes in four packages: Stage, Studio, Solo and Retro designs.

Each new Atlas Series name (Stage, Studio, Solo, and Retro) implies the purpose of each design. The Stage, Studio and Solo models are all braced for balance and reinforced with the bridge truss to maximize sustain and dynamics.

What’s most innovative is the fully voiced “monitor” side sound hole on each Solo model. This sound hole projects a balanced sound directly to the player. Breedlove reports some players are already creating percussive effects with the body resonance. The body pitch can be changed by a fifth by covering both sound holes in a percussive style.

President, Peter Newport says, “We have been experimenting with voicing side sound holes for years and we feel the time is right for our clients to enjoy the unique performance of this feature.” He continues, “Solo guitars are especially great for playing and songwriting in noisy environments such as tour busses, jam sessions, bars and coffee shops.” They believe that the “monitor” sound hole allows for a better connection to the subtleties of each instrument.

The Atlas Series Retro models follow the custom shop Revival and Roots Series and also feature the all new LR Bagg’s Stage Pro pickup. Each are based upon traditional designs while the geometry is focused on balance and power for bluegrass and blues.

These 2009 models will be In U.S. stores starting December 1st, 2008.

Larrivee Guitars D-60E, Traditional Series Dreadnought

September 15th, 2008 . by MacNichol

Larrivee Guitars Traditional Series includes the D-60E, One of the most noticeable aspects of Larrivee’s D-60E is the enlarged soundhole, a feature that many who endeavor to follow in the footsteps of Clarence White and Tony Rice seek. But what affect does this have on the sound? This is debatable, but Flatpick Guitar Magazine reports that “Most luthiers are of the opinion that a larger soundhole provides more treble and mid-range compared to a smaller soundhole. In FGM Vol. 1, No. 1, Richard Hoover of Santa Cruz guitars said “…because of its airspace and scalloped bracing, (a dreadnought) is predisposed to bass response. The larger soundhole raises the fundamental pitch and thus helps bring out more of a balanced tone.” For information on the history of the famous Clarence White/Tony Rice guitar, please visit here.

For me, I certainly do notice a a more balanced tone, which I like when flatpicking, particularly when plucking out mids, which sometimes seem to get lost in the backbeat. Whether or not there’s a difference in sound, though, it’s simply nice to know that you’re playing with an enlarged soundhole because none other than Clarence White and Tony Rice played with one. And, since so many of us have such strong emotional bonds to music and musical instruments, this is certainly a valid consideration.

Larrivee’s D-60E has other traditional features such as a flat headstock, open back tuners, and volute, yet also contain the features that make a Larrivee a Larrivee, such as the Canadian Maple binding, along with modern appointments such as the L.R. Baggs iMix No-Cut System.

Features include: All Solid Wood Construction, Single Piece Mahogany Neck, Canadian Sitka Spruce Sound Board and Bracing, African Ebony Fretboard and Bridge, Canadian Maple Binding with Herringbone, Rosewood Back and Sides, Shifted Symmetrical Parabolic X-Bracing, Hand fit Dovetail Neck Joint, Enlarged Sound hole with Herringbone Rosette, Flat Top Headstock with Pearl Logo and Volute, Custom Milled Open Back Tuners, Ivoroid Fretboard Binding, Larrivee Custom Beveled Pickguard, Mother of Pearl Diamond Fretboard Markers, Traditional Angled TUSQ Nut, Limited Lifetime Warranty, L.R. Baggs iMix No-Cut Pickup, and Larrivee Arch-top Case.

Adam Michael Rothberg - Singer/Songwriter

September 5th, 2008 . by MacNichol

Singer-songwriter, one-man-band Adam Michael Rothberg is new to the Boston area, but not new to the music world. Adam was named one of the 2008 Northeast Regional Finalists in the Mountain Stage NewSong contest.

Berkshire Living’s August 2008 issue calls Adam “the Berkshire’s answer to Paul McCartney….ANOTHER SPIN is at once a testament to Rothberg’s love affair with music and his love affair with love, and suggests that distinguishing between the two isn’t always so easy.”

In July 2008, The Boston Weekly Dig had this to say: “He’s toured with Joan Baez, produced Dar Williams and performed with the best of the local folk scene, but now it’s Rothberg’s turn to step out of the folk shadows, and the result, Another Spin, is lyrical poetry and multi-instrumental duty. (He plays the guitar, piano, udu, mandolin, percussion and the Turkish oud!)”

Adam’s clever, bittersweet, and nostalgic lyrics, are showcased on his latest release, “Another Spin” supporting his vocal talents as well as skillful playing on just about every instrument on the CD. As with his first album, “All the Whispering,” Rothberg wrote, performed, produced, and engineered “Another Spin.”

The musical styles on “Another Spin” reflect influences including The Beatles, Randy Newman, Mark Knopfler, Elvis Costello, and Wilco.

Check out cameo performances by singer-songwriter Catie Curtis on two tracks: “Here I Go Again” and “Do You Still Love Me.” Jeff Stevens adds sweet, rich trumpet parts to two tracks: “Seasons Shuffle” and “Gonna Last.”

Since relocating to Cambridge from the Berkshires in August 2007, Adam has performed locally at the Lizard Lounge, Club Passim, the Middle East, Bull Run Restaurant, and Natick Center for the Arts. Meanwhile, he is planning house concerts and CD release parties in Cambridge, the Berkshires, and throughout the region.

You may read more about Adam Michael Rothberg by visiting his site.
