Lately I’ve been in love with OM body guitars, and so now is a great time to look at Larrivee Guitars OM-03RE, which, has great balance and a sweet yet dark tone. The guitar will work well for a variety of playing styles, but will work particularly well for fingerstyle and fingerpicking, as well as slow/medium strumming, Carter picking, and crosspicking.
I started out with flatpicks - a 2.0 mm and a .73 mm Dunlop, and a 1.0 mm and a 0.72 Pointless Picks. If you haven’t played a pointless pick, give one a try. Check out www.completelyoblivious.com and my Pointless Picks review. Light and medium strumming work great with or without a pick. Hard strumming can be done with hands or a with a flexible pick, but I wouldn’t advise doing hard strumming with a thicker pick.
I then tried a bit of fingerstyle and fingerpicking. As expected, the OM-03RE produced great balance, along with a touch more bass than I would expect from an OM. The bass is dark yet sweet, with a slight piano-like timbre to it. The mids are mellow, and the highs have a touch of “snap” to them.
Features include: All Solid Wood Construction, Single Piece Mahogany Neck, Canadian Sitka Spruce Sound Board and Bracing, African Ebony Fretboard and Bridge, Canadian Maple Multi-strip Body Binding, Rosewood Back and Sides, Symmetrical Parabolic X-Bracing, Hand fit Dovetail Neck Joint, Abalone Rosette, Pearl Logo and Silver Headstock Border, Chrome Ping Tuners with 18:1 ratio, Ivoroid Fretboard Binding, Exclusive Tortis Beveled Pickguard, Microdot Fretboard Markers, Compensated TUSQ Saddle, Limited Lifetime Warranty, L.R. Baggs Element Notch System (Single Source), and Larrivee Guitars Hardshell Case.

Perhaps the first thing that you may notice about Larrivee Guitars dreadnought, model D05, is that, like other Larrivee mahogany guitars, it is much lighter in appearance than many other builders’ mahogany guitars are. This light appearance is highlighted by the Canadian maple binding, which, since the D-05 does not have electronics, is quite striking on the bottom as there is no strap button, something to note if you plan to play while standing up - you may want to go for the D-05E instead.

Larrivee’s D-05 has the bright, singing, whiny highs that you would expect from a sitka/mahogany combination, along with clear mids and the deep, yet not overpowering bass. I used fingers, flatpick and slide, and all turned out well. I also liked this model for percussive rhythm playing as it delivered a nice snap.

Larrivee Guitars LV-05E is one of the most versatile guitars around. The L-Body, designed by Jean Larrivee, essentially combines the best of a dreadnought and a grand auditorium. From playing with fingers to percussive strumming to slide playing, this guitar sounds great regardless of what may come.
When playing with fingers, the LV-05E responds much like a grand auditorium, with a full, balanced sound. However, you can easily shift over to a flatpick and dig in. I used a 2.0 mm Dunlop pick and subjected the guitar to hard strumming, bluegrass licks, blues runs, glass slide, and percussive strumming. All sounded great except the hard strumming, which sounded “clicky”, which is no surprise with a 2.0 mm thick pick. So, I shifted to a Dunlop 0.73 mm pick and, as expected, the Larrivee produced a full dreadnought-like strum. The glass slide sounded especially good, with the mahogany producing a clear, whining sound.
Built with a sitka spruce top and mahogany back/sides, the LV-05E has a bright appearance that reflects its sound. The model also comes with a soft cutaway with the soft curves of a Venetian cutaway, but also has the relative flatness of a Maccaferri cutaway. Other features include: All Solid Wood Construction, Single Piece Mahogany Neck, Canadian Sitka Spruce Sound Board and Bracing, African Ebony Fretboard and Bridge, Canadian Maple Multi-strip Body Binding, Mahogany Back and Sides, Symmetrical Parabolic X-Bracing, Hand fit Dovetail Neck Joint, Abalone Rosette, Pearl Logo and Silver Headstock Border, Chrome Ping Tuners with 18:1 ratio, Ivoroid Fretboard Binding, Larrivee Custom Beveled Pickguard, Microdot Fretboard Markers, Compensated TUSQ Saddle, Limited Lifetime Warranty, L.R. Baggs iMix Notch System (Dual Source), and Larrivee Guitars Arch-top Hardshell Case.

MacNichol Guitars and Mandolins takes great care in shipping instruments. We typically ship instruments via FedEx, but will occasionally use the US Postal Service or UPS. Insurance is included so you can rest easy.
Before your instrument is sent, it is checked for quality assurance. Once it passes, it is wiped down with a microfiber cloth. Then, depending on the time of the year and make/model of instrument, it may be placed either in a foam or plastic bag, and then placed in the case, such as how this CA Guitars GXi model is packed:

Here’s a Breedlove twelve string guitar wrapped in plastic:

The headstock is supported by crumpled paper to ensure that the weight of the tuning machines does not damage the instrument while in transit, such as in the following picture of a Weber Mandolin:

The instrument is then placed into the manufacturer’s original packaging, which is specifically designed for instrument travel. For example, Breedlove uses special inserts at the top and bottom that contain thick plastic that allows the guitar to fit snugly, but also allows for a little bit of movement so that the guitar does not take a hard jolt. Please see the pictures below.

Breedlove’s special insert form fits snugly over the top of the guitar case, providing a safe travel environment:

Once the instrument is delivered to the carrier, you will receive an e-mail with your tracking number. Depending on the time of year, MacNichol may wait a few days to ship your instrument. For example, during the cold, dry winter months, we usually only ship instruments on Mondays and Tuesdays because we don’t want the instruments to sit in a cold, dry warehouse over a weekend.

Larrivee Guitars are among the world’s prettiest guitars, and the LV09E is certainly no exception, with smooth, flowing curves that blend well with the Venetian cutaway, along with Canadian maple multi-strip body binding, as well as a silver border along the headstock.
The L-Body, designed by Jean Larrivee, essentially combines the best of a dreadnought and a grand auditorium resulting in a versatile guitar that works well for strumming or fingerstyle. I even dug in with some bluegrass licks on the LV09E and was impressed by how “dreanoughty” the L-Body holds up. Granted, for really digging in you would want to go for a dreadnought (such as Larrivee’s Traditional Series), but if you want just a little less punch than what a dreadnought produces, you’ll be happy with the Larrivee L-Body. The LVO9E also sounds great with a slide, producing a loud and punchy sound that emphasizes up and down slide movements.
Features include: All Solid Wood Construction, Single Piece Mahogany Neck, Canadian Sitka Spruce Sound Board and Bracing, African Ebony Fretboard and Bridge, Canadian Maple Multi-strip Body Binding, Rosewood Back and Sides, Symmetrical Parabolic X-Bracing, Hand fit Dovetail Neck Joint, Abalone Rosette, Pearl Logo and Silver Headstock Border, Chrome Tuners with 18:1 ratio, Ivoroid Fretboard Binding, Larrivee Custom Beveled Pickguard, Microdot Fretboard Markers, Compensated TUSQ Saddle, Limited Lifetime Warranty, L.R. Baggs iMix Notch System (Dual Source), and Larrivee Guitars Arch-top Hardshell Case.
